Me in the Frame + A Throwaway Critique

Alin just left. I wanted to get a photo of him, but next time when we do the video. He took my artist photo. Different than taking your own selfie. I have problems with most of the images taken of me, or my selfies. But I”m excited to see what he created. He is a gift, I’m so grateful Erik Palmer connected us.a

Throwaway Critique

Ashland, OR 2014 I inserted myself into the frame, and used found photos and pickstich stickers but it felt lonely there and no heart here and the critique was too easy, mocking that aspirational self: and then this happened. i happened. In State of the Selfie, I sense levels, something closer to true.

Risk + Reward

For some reason, working on the rewards has been the biggest challenge of this project. I’ve found much inspiration from This Kickstarter Video.  I’m VERY inspired by the following projects below. I sent an email to Kickstarter for one level of the rewards – where I want to ask people from the Kickstarter community to send me their photos. I hope this is within the rules. I’m SO excited to share this project with everyone. Butterflies and terror.

Captions, Constellations

In 2013 I started researching selfies on Tumblr. Found a lot of porn. Bare chests in bathrooms.

hashing the map #selfie I liked looking at the edges, like what’s in the corner of the photo.

Things on countertops, in piles on the floor.

Sometimes, the ephemera told me more about a person than Honesty from a disembodied body.

Divination – Directions

Here is my workspace. Plus text from advertisements and color stories.

IMG_0346

There’s an interesting article in the New Yorker – that I have not completed – by Emily Nussbaum – about what advertising does to TV. I find advertising to be a source of inspiration, and it’s always locating the current zeigeist, a reveal of the collective thought. Just take a look at Dominos Pizza using emojis in their commercials.

I’ve talked a bit about what art has influenced me in my about page. Digital storytelling is a thing, and I’m interested in the intersection between art, life and advertising. Clearly, advertising is synonymous with capitalism, but I tend to believe that even the most money-hungry ad campaign has the potential to re-contextualize thinking. Dove Real Beauty campaigns are a perfect example. Although some may feel the pang of Absolute Manipulation, I think this is where the space for reaching those who have not though of this yet. That to me is what is so hilarious about user generated content initiatives by brands: they know how splayed they are, and know everyone’s an author, and yes, and so they co-opt it. But brands these days are harried, and chasing the consumer, all of us for the story, which is beautiful and perfect, and people know this.

In any case, what appeals to me here is the on the road 1st person narrative. The language and image here: gets to the root of yearning. These two ads somehow have inspired the storyboard for the Kickstarter video, although much of it (the concept for SOS) was already born somewhere between A street and B street in the railroad district in Ashland.

SOS Swag

Rewards. Here are some mockups. It’s exciting and a challenge figuring out what is what and the costs for the budget. I’m still working out who to use – CustomInk, RedBubble. My crush of all time is Social Print Studio!!!!! – I missed their artist residency deadline and wish I hadn’t – but Jason says there is a new one coming up down the line. I”ll be applying. If you’re reading this and have an opinion, let me know which one you like. That would be good to know.

A Pitcher Inside a Picture

I’m loving working on this website, and the Coatal Theme rocks. It’s exciting and unnerving to begin this process. Here is a photo of my new juicer. The old one was given to me by a neighbor when I lived in Silverlake. He was going off to Costa Rica to be a teacher. This juicer healed me through many things. Then, I ran into him at an artist residency, Ragdale Artist Colony a few years later. Small world. I know that juicing will help me through this process. A pitcher of juice inside a picture.

Burning House BFF + Sophie Calle Badass

I thouht it would be fun to repurpose a blog post I made on my marketing website. IT relates here.

  • Objects as pointers to a person.
  • Objects as portraits.
  • I’m in love with Burning House. Forever BFF.

  • Sophie Calle nailed it years ago in The Hotel, Room 47, 1981
  • “On Monday, February 16, 1981, I was hired as a temporary chambermaid for three weeks in a Venetian hotel. I was assigned twelve bedrooms on the fourth floor. In the course of my cleaning duties, I examined the personal belongings of the hotel guests and observed through details lives which remained unknown to me. On Friday, March 6, the job came to an end.” – Sophie Calle

  • Here’s the start of a photo series I’ve conceptualized for SOU. What would this image look like for the Theatre Dept, the Art Dept, the Anthropology Lab? Stay tuned…
  • Many brands are up on this  Burning House troupe. For me, it never gets old. Portraits are my thing.
